Diego and José - en la playa
Hola de nuevo, amigos. Last month I introduced our two friends from Madrid. This month, here is a short story about them on the beach.
First, try reading the story through and see what you can understand. Then read again, and use the vocab section below to help you translate. If you like, make a written translation, with the help of a dictionary if necessary. Go back and look again at the expressions, and look at the verb forms (nearly all present tense in this story).

Las aventuras de López y Sánchez
En la playa
Es el mes de agosto, y Diego y José están pasando sus vacaciones junto al mar, han alquilado un piso con 4 habitaciones, suficiente para las dos familias.
El piso está situado en la playa de Mojácar, un lugar precioso para veranear. En Mojácar hay muchos extranjeros: ingleses, alemanes, suecos y franceses. La casa tiene vistas al mar, y una terraza grande donde pueden tomar el sol. Todos los días bajan a la playa a bañarse en el Mediterráneo.
Un día, están en la playa las dos familias, tumbados en la arena. Al lado hay un grupo de chicas inglesas. José se acerca al grupo, y intenta hablar y bromear con ellas. Habla muy poco inglés, así que se hacen entender con gestos.
Amalia, la mujer de Diego, cuando ve a José hablando con las inglesas, dice a la mujer de José, Mari Cruz:
- Mira, tu marido está intentando ligar con las inglesas.
Mari Cruz empieza a reírse.
- ¿Por qué te estás riendo? ¡Tu marido está allí charlando con chicas jóvenes!
- ¡Porque yo estoy contando el tiempo para ver cuánto tiempo aguanta metiendo la barriga para adentro!

- José se acerca - José goes up to, approaches (acercarse - to go close to, approach, go up to)
- intenta - he tries (intentar, to attempt, try)
- bromear - to joke
- se hacen entender - they make themselves understood
- gestos - gestures
- ligar con - "to get off with, pull or pick up!"
- reírse - to laugh
- te estás riendo - you are laughing
- contando el tiempo - counting the time (contar, to count)
- aguanta - he holds out, resists endures (aguantar)
- metiendo – putting in (meter, to put in)
- la barriga - stomach, belly
